Some days I would tune better than others and I thought-why was this so? Was it me? Was it the piano?

Eventually I realised that it was a combination of both. Sometimes I could not determine the correct beats and had to make a best compromise and this was even on the same piano!

It was often frustrating to complete a tenor temperament and then check the tune with intervals and find it was not perfect. This required extra work to correct. I even borrowed the 'Conn Tuner' from my piano tuning teacher to compare. My teacher would also check me and point out the subtle errors. There had to be a better way!

Being from an electronics background I checked the price of existing tuning references and the prices were way more than I could afford at the time. I therefore set about designing and building my own custom electronic tuner. During this time I investigated the possibility of using the highly accurate frequency generation within computers. I soon discovered that others had seen this potential as well and written software to take advantage of it.

After experimenting with this approach it was obvious that here was the number one replacement for the tradional beat ratio method. It was simple, easy to learn and highly accurate.
